What is the difference between an ETF and ETN?

ETF's and ETN's are similar as they both track specific indicators and are traded on an exchange. When you buy an ETF, you own shares of a fund which provides you with partial ownership of a bundle of securities. When you buy an ETN, you hold a debt security that is issued by a financial institution, and the ETN performance is linked to the credit rating of the issuing financial institution.
